TWENTY-ONE

ONE BENEFIT OF GETTING A total stranger off with her foot instead of just fucking him was the reduced risk of further complications down the road. There was no chance of getting an STD or becoming impregnated, which was nice. Given the profoundly fucked-up state of her existence, she couldn’t imagine a more horrifying development than the latter. Not that she’d ever harbored any strong desire to give birth. Even prior to the erosion of her humanity, she’d known she wasn’t meant for that kind of life. She was already too broken, too socially incompetent to ever be a good mother. The way she saw it, she was doing society a favor by recognizing her shortcomings in this area and taking the necessary steps to ensure such a disaster never occurred.

Now, of course, other recent deeds of a far darker nature had undoubtedly negated any prior spiritual goodwill she’d earned. Soon enough her parents, former coworkers, and other acquaintances would hear about the things she’d done. The basic details were lurid enough to elevate the story beyond the level of ordinary murder. The corpse mutilation and hints of cannibalism alone would ensure that. Then factor in that she was a young female perpetrator and obsessed horror fan and suddenly you had a story so sensational the media might feast on it for weeks or months to come, perhaps even longer. She couldn’t give a shit what her estranged parents or phony online “friends” thought about her. The only thing that did bother her a little was how the horror community would perceive her. She knew from personal experience how horror fandom negatively colored the way the public perceived people who loved the genre. It was massively unfair. Most genre fans were normal, loving people who weren’t nearly as messed up as she was.

They were going to hate her now.

It sucked, but there was nothing she could do about it. Short of turning herself in, maybe, but no way in hell was she doing that.

By the time they arrived at the Walmart—no more than a ten-minute ride from that little roadside clearing—she’d already deduced they were somewhere in Tennessee. The license plates she saw on most of the vehicles they passed gave that away. She wouldn’t have guessed her location based on Isaac’s accent, which had only the smallest hint of southern flavor, and even that she only detected in retrospect.

She was intensely self-conscious as they entered the store, being the only person barefoot and in shorts. A store employee gave her grief over the lack of shoes shortly after they walked through the entrance, but the situation was defused when Isaac calmly explained why they were there. A basic pair of gray sneakers was procured, purchased, and donned in short order.

Her self-consciousness did not fade as she threaded her way through the various racks and tables in the women’s clothing department. People kept looking at her and making her uncomfortable. These weren’t just casual glances, either. Several people, male and female, openly stared at her as she selected her outfits.
